Atkins Gallery is having a COVID Christmas Remembrance Tree where people can hang an ornament to represent someone they lost to coronavirus. From 1st December people can bring in bauble either purchased or handmade to hang on the tree. Also available are pre cut plain wooden decorations for people to decorate with the name of their loved one which can be collected from the Reception at Atkins Building.
The Christmas tree is a sustainable real tree which is being rented from local business Love a Christmas Tree who will collect the tree after Christmas and return it to the ground at their farm in Kirkby Mallory.
The COVID Christmas Remembrance tree accompanies the next exhibition in Atkins Gallery called Journey. Journey is a collaborative exhibition led by trainee art therapist Lyni Sargent, exploring the topic of human emotions and how art can be used to process the events of life. Lyni was motivated to create the exhibition after the passing of her father.

What are your childhood Memories?
Atkins Gallery Open Exhibitions return this summer with a new brief to inspire local artists!
This year's theme is Childhood Memories a broad and all encompassing title which can be interpreted in many different ways. The title encourages expressive reminiscence and allows the artist to draw upon personal memories or explore a more generalised nostalgia. You might want to think about people you have known, things you have seen, experiences you have enjoyed. You could consider special occasions or milestones in your life; favourite colours, foods or toys from your youth; or changing styles and fashions when you were growing up. You might create a piece highlighting people, places or products that are no longer with us. You might decide to paint an old photograph or draw a collection of childhood relics; or you might sketch a place you have visited or create a collage using ephemera from the year you were born!
There are many possibilities and submissions interpreting the theme in a variety of media are welcome.
If you are interested in exhibiting in the Open Exhibition please download a copy of the Exhibitor Pack. Please read the information thoroughly, the back page is to be filled in and returned to us along with your submitted pieces. Artists can submit up to three pieces for £12 (instructions on making the online payment is included in the pack) and artwork is to be submitted between 26th – 30th June and be collected after the exhibition between 1st – 4th August 2017.
A Lunchtime Launch is on Saturday 8th July to kick-start the exhibition, giving visitors the opportunity to meet the artists involved and discuss the artwork on display. The Lunchtime Launch will be free entry and welcomes everyone, with refreshments available from Café Español

The couple admitted to being over-the-moon at the news they had won, stating that “when we entered we never even had the thought that we might win. It came as a complete surprise.”
Included in the prizes were a Michelle Kemp Photography gift voucher for pre-wedding couple photo shoot including one mount print; £50 gift voucher from Sue Todd of Designer Travel; a hamper of best-selling Forever Living Products courtesy of local representative Jennifer Plester, Choices Floristry gift Voucher; £100 towards wedding décor when selected from the WOW Business; free chair covers from The Meeting Centre and a custom made vanilla sponge cake made specially by Ann Patchett of Ann’s Party Catering.
