Atkins Gallery is having a COVID Christmas Remembrance Tree where people can hang an ornament to represent someone they lost to coronavirus. From 1st December people can bring in bauble either purchased or handmade to hang on the tree. Also available are pre cut plain wooden decorations for people to decorate with the name of their loved one which can be collected from the Reception at Atkins Building.
The Christmas tree is a sustainable real tree which is being rented from local business Love a Christmas Tree who will collect the tree after Christmas and return it to the ground at their farm in Kirkby Mallory.
The COVID Christmas Remembrance tree accompanies the next exhibition in Atkins Gallery called Journey. Journey is a collaborative exhibition led by trainee art therapist Lyni Sargent, exploring the topic of human emotions and how art can be used to process the events of life. Lyni was motivated to create the exhibition after the passing of her father.
As part of our COVID-19 Secure strategy Atkins Building has put measures in place to record visitor details for NHS Trace and Test service.
Atkins Building remains closed to the general public at present with access by appointments only with Leicestershire Registration Service and the other businesses based at Atkins Building.

Recording customer details: how we use your information
To support NHS Test and Trace (which is part of the Department for Health and Social Care) in England, we have been mandated by law to collect and keep a limited record of staff, customers and visitors who come onto our premises for the purpose of contact tracing.
By maintaining records of staff, customers and visitors, and sharing these with NHS Test and Trace where requested, we can help to identify people who may have been exposed to the coronavirus.
As a customer/visitor of Atkins Building - HBBC you will be asked to provide some basic information and contact details. The following information will be collected:
- the names of all customers or visitors, or if it is a group of people, the name of one member of the group
- a contact phone number for each customer or visitor, or for the lead member of a group of people
- date of visit and arrival time and departure time
Atkins building - HBBC as the data controllers for the collection of your personal data, will be responsible for compliance with data protection legislation for the period of time it holds the information. When that information is requested by the NHS Test and Trace service, the service would at this point be responsible for compliance with data protection legislation for that period of time.
The NHS Test and Trace service as part of safeguarding your personal data, has in place technical, organisational and administrative security measures to protect your personal information that it receives from the venue/establishment, that it holds from loss, misuse, and unauthorised access, disclosure, alteration and destruction.
In addition, if you only interact with one member of staff during your visit, the name of the assigned staff member will be recorded alongside your information.
NHS Test and Trace have asked us to retain this information for 21 days from the date of your visit, to enable contact tracing to be carried out by NHS Test and Trace during that period. We will only share information with NHS Test and Trace if it is specifically requested by them.
For example, if another customer at the venue reported symptoms and subsequently tested positive, NHS Test and Trace can request the log of customer details for a particular time period (for example, this may be all customers who visited on a particular day or time-band, or over a 2-day period).
Under government guidance, the information we collect may include information which we would not ordinarily collect from you and which we therefore collect only for the purpose of contact tracing. Information of this type will not be used for other purposes, and NHS Test and Trace will not disclose this information to any third party unless required to do so by law (for example, as a result of receiving a court order). In addition, where the information is only collected for the purpose of contact tracing, it will be destroyed by us 21 days after the date of your visit.
However, the government guidance may also cover information that we would usually collect and hold onto as part of our ordinary dealings with you (perhaps, for example, your name, date of birth and phone number). Where this is the case, this information only will continue to be held after 21 days and we will use it as we usually would, unless and until you tell us not to.
Your information will always be stored and used in compliance with the relevant data protection legislation.
The use of your information is covered by the General Data Protection Regulations Article 6 (1) (c) – a legal obligation to which we as a venue/establishment are subject to. The legal obligation to which we’re subject, means that we’re mandated by law, by a set of new regulations from the government, to co-operate with the NHS Test and Trace service, in order to help maintain a safe operating environment and to help fight any local outbreak of corona virus.
By law, you have a number of rights as a data subject, such as the right to be informed, the right to access information held about you and the right to rectification of any inaccurate data that we hold about you.
You have the right to request that we erase personal data about you that we hold (although this is not an absolute right).
You have the right to request that we restrict processing of personal data about you that we hold in certain circumstances.
You have the right to object to processing of personal data about you on grounds relating to your particular situation (also again this right is not absolute).
If you are unhappy or wish to complain about how your information is used, you should contact a member of staff in the first instance to resolve your issue.
If you are still not satisfied, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office. Their website address is http://www.ico.org.uk.

Atkins Building has got a great programme of events and exhibitions happening this winter in Atkins Gallery
Bouncing Back 11 Nov - 25 Nov
An exhibition featuring work from a collective of artists who chose to Bounce back when their artworks were destroyed by an arson attack.
In 2010, Terry Hartshorn, an artist and resident of Stretton-under-Fosse approached the Malt Kiln Farm Shop also in Stretton-Under-Fosse with the idea of opening a gallery adjacent to the already popular farm Café.
The resulting Gallery offered a bright, airy space and an excellent outlet for the work of several well established and new up and coming artists living and working in Leicestershire and Warwickshire.
By 2016 the gallery was attracting the work of numerous artists based in Warwickshire, Leicestershire and even Northamptonshire. The Gallery had proved to be so successful for Malt Kiln Farm and the exhibiting artists that extensions to the existing Gallery and Café were planned.
Then on 26th June 2016, the complex was struck by disaster in the shape of an arson attack. Fire swept through the building, completely destroying the farm shop, cafe and the gallery. Five fire engines from Rugby, Nuneaton, Coventry and Binley, the command support vehicle, water bowser and aerial platform from Leamington Spa were deployed to tackle the flames. The artists lost all the artworks, easels, display boards and other equipment and a local family lost its business, all destroyed in a couple of hours A rare and vital community facility and a huge expression of creative endeavour were lost in one senseless, wicked and violent act.
Thankfully, the owners of the farm shop have proved to be resilient and the shop, cafe and gallery have since reopened and the community of artists have also been undaunted by this tragic incident.
“Bouncing Back” is an exhibition of work in reaction to the fire and loss of a creative space on display at the Atkins Gallery, Atkins Building, Lower Bond Street, Hinckley from 11th - 25th November. Work by local artists; Michelle Leche, Terry Hartshorn, Paul Percival, Jackie Ward, and Janet Watson will be on show. The work speaks of a new beginning, new ideas and offers a view of an exciting future. Demonstrating that creativity will always shine through.

Colour in a Monochrome World 2017 6 Dec 2017 - 2 Jan 2018
Penny and Colin first met while studying for a masters Degree in Fine Art in 2005. They have exhibited work together ever since. This exhibition explores diversity; in the combination of art materials not normally worked together and differences within society.
Penny Andrews, a textile artist, uses her psychotherapy background as a starting point for creative work. In her work for this exhibition she explores childhood issues. Children under the age of 10 make sense of the world and their experiences with limited knowledge and understanding. How they interpret their world during these early years can have an impact on their future lives. Penny’s work explores the impact ridicule and humiliation can have on creativity.
Colin Ward, fine artist, has been practising art from an early age. He has always used a wide variety of materials in his work. In this exhibition Colin has been exploring unusual combinations of medium; glass with ceramics, glass and fabric, acrylic on canvas combined with fluorescent celluloid. Colin’s work is inspired by people and nature.

What are your childhood Memories?
Atkins Gallery Open Exhibitions return this summer with a new brief to inspire local artists!
This year's theme is Childhood Memories a broad and all encompassing title which can be interpreted in many different ways. The title encourages expressive reminiscence and allows the artist to draw upon personal memories or explore a more generalised nostalgia. You might want to think about people you have known, things you have seen, experiences you have enjoyed. You could consider special occasions or milestones in your life; favourite colours, foods or toys from your youth; or changing styles and fashions when you were growing up. You might create a piece highlighting people, places or products that are no longer with us. You might decide to paint an old photograph or draw a collection of childhood relics; or you might sketch a place you have visited or create a collage using ephemera from the year you were born!
There are many possibilities and submissions interpreting the theme in a variety of media are welcome.
If you are interested in exhibiting in the Open Exhibition please download a copy of the Exhibitor Pack. Please read the information thoroughly, the back page is to be filled in and returned to us along with your submitted pieces. Artists can submit up to three pieces for £12 (instructions on making the online payment is included in the pack) and artwork is to be submitted between 26th – 30th June and be collected after the exhibition between 1st – 4th August 2017.
A Lunchtime Launch is on Saturday 8th July to kick-start the exhibition, giving visitors the opportunity to meet the artists involved and discuss the artwork on display. The Lunchtime Launch will be free entry and welcomes everyone, with refreshments available from Café Español

Since this organisation dissolved earlier this year, the Atkins Team have taken back the gallery, rebranding it as The Atkins Gallery, and has created a programme of events and exhibitions which are being managed in a completely different way to before.
The Christmas Gift Fair will include Christmas gift ideas and other festive treats, encompassing crafts, home-made items and much more! We expect to see a variety of stalls with plenty of interesting items for sale and things to help get you in the festive mood. There will be exhibitors displaying their wares, including ceramics, men and women’s jewellery, fine art prints, textile items, greeting cards, Christmas decorations and plenty of other unique items. The fair will be taking place in the Atkins Gallery, situated directly adjacent to Café Español so you can grab a cup of coffee or a bite to eat in between browsing for Christmas products.
This year’s Christmas Gift Fair at the Atkins Building will be taking place on Saturday 21st November from 10am till 4pm. For those who would like to exhibit and sell their items for the festive season, a stall is £30+VAT for the day. Payment is to be made online on the HBBC website (instructions are included on the entry form). Atkins Building hosted a family reunion for the Atkins Family on Saturday 26th April which was well attended by the hosiery generations and their children, with one guest travelling from Australia! The family also visited the Great Meeting Chapel to see the graves of George and Elizabeth Atkins who along with their five sons started building the factory we see today in 1875. Inside the chapel the family received a talk from chapel volunteers Hugh Beavin and Pat Oliver about the Atkins family connections with the chapel and the contributions they made to Hinckley and the surrounding area.
