The following images form the 2020 Earl Shilton Camera Club Photography Exhibition which due to current COVID-19 circumstances has gone virtual. The images are by members of the Earl Shilton Camera Club and are a mix of members favourites and others that have done well in club competitions.
The Earl Shilton Camera Club or ESCC provides an opportunity for like minded people who share an interest in photography to come together to talk about their passion. It has around 35 members ranging from novice to expert who are all willing to share advice and knowledge.
The philosophy of the ESCC is to try to improve and we believe this is best achieved by doing i.e. "actually taking photographs".
So to facilitate this the club season includes a number of competitions some of which are externally judged
Secretary's Challenge, Trevor Wain UK Landscape,
Neville Jackson Image of the Year (IOTY)
Whilst others form the rounds for the Photographer of the year competing for the Wendy Jarvis Memorial Trophy. These rounds are peer voted and are often themed to try to push the author out of their comfort zone and into trying new subjects and techniques. When an external judge is used they provide comments and suggestions on how to improve the image
For peer voted competitions we hold a separate critique evening when members can give their opinions and we hear how the author took the image. The club also enters into a number of competitions with other local clubs and on a slightly large scale competitions hosted by the Midland Counties Photographic Federation

"I took this only yesterday as usual with my Nikon D5200 - f5 @ 1/640th sec and ISO 400. on a tripod and for the first time I used my new Cokin ND8 sq filter"
"I planned a day out in London to mainly photograph 'Street' / People and Architecture. I booked a later train home as it was November and this enabled me to get some night time images.
This image was taken on London's South Bank in an area called 'More London' close to Tower Bridge. There is some great architecture in this area but I settled on a composition with a large pipe structure (which is a design feature running along the top of a wall) giving me a leading line to the River Thames and the buildings in the 'City' district on the other side. The couple of people standing by the wall looking at the view gave some additional interest and scale. Because it was a night time long exposure I used a mini tripod balanced on the pipe to steady my camera.
I set my camera for an exposure of f/11, ISO100 at 24mm, I then focused on the couple a few feet away. These settings gave me a sharp image through the whole scene including the distant buildings. The raw file was processed in Adobe Lightroom."
Features the famous station in London taken on a photography trip just before travel was restricted. Its a montage of the themes meant to depict the virus including Mont Blanc, climbers, cyclists, a dog and a crocodile.
The images were mostly taken on a Nikon D850 and a 24-120 Nikon lens and constructed using up to thirty layers in Photoshop.
Taken 9/11/19 at 8am on a cold frosty morning when house boats had their fires burning which I thought gave nice drifting smoke across a nice sunrise.

"I was walking along footpath in Slapton Sands Devon spotted this young woman sitting on the sea wall engrossed in a book, and oblivious to what was going on around her."

"Both my images were taken at the last studio shoot I did before the lockdown kicked in.
They were both taken with one light source, an overhead soft box . I metered the light and move the F setting up one stop to get a softer effect. With Fairy steps the model is directly below the light giving a brighter overall effect. Where as in seeking inspiration she is seated to the rear of the light giving more shadows. I wanted to give a soft feel to the images and when printing them I have used matt paper which again helps to soften them.
So my aim was to get soft, simple , atmospheric images"
Taken 2/10/19 at 9.43am when the road was flooded and only 4x4 vehicles took a chance !

"During a photo trip to London I planned to photograph some interiors of underground tube stations. They can be unique and have some amazing architecture.
This image was taken at Embankment Station in one of the Northern line access tunnels. An additional problem nobody was using the tunnel.
After a long wait and some strange looks from the security staff, a lone girl walked past me and continued down the tunnel."

"Taken at the Victory Show Cosby. This interesting couple were watching the air show. I liked the clothes and good colour contrast with the black and red. It shows you can get good impact from people shots without necessarily seeing their full faces."

"I took this image using a tripod with a Fujifilm XT3 camera fitted with a 18x140mm lens
I set the flower inside a light tent against a silver grey background with lighting source from above
Using these settings F/11, 1/60, Manual exposure, Focal length 140mm
Used photoshop for slight enhancements
It was taken in lockdown before we were allowed out anywhere
and i was trying to show depth of field to have all the parts of the flowers in focus"
"I was fortunate to visit Oman just before lockdown. It is an interesting country with an individual character. The majority of Omanis are Ibadi Muslims. The country has changed considerably during the past 50 years. This image gives old and new aspects and represents the strong influences of religion and the recent investment.
The mosque was completed in 2001 taking 6 years to build. It covers a massive area of 416,000 square meters, made up of 300,000 tons of sandstone and can hold up to 20,000 worshipers.
The image was taken on a Canon EOS 5D Mk4 with a 16-35mm f4 lens, set to ISO 100, 35mm, f8 and 1/160sec. It was processed in Affinity Photo

"This was taken on the footbridge linking the car park to Selfridges in the bull ring shopping centre in Birmingham. Looking towards Selfridges, I waited until a single person was in the desired position. The image was converted to black and white for the desired effect."
Taken in New Zealand at Cathedral Cove, North Island. "We walked for 1.5 hours in the pitch dark, with just head torches to guide us,to get to this place before the sun came up.
No idea if the sunrise was going to be worth it!
We arrived about half an hour before the sky began to colour up (we wanted to be the first photographers there, it is very popular)
Needless to say - we stayed there for about 2 hours and many a shot was taken!"
I used a Canon 5D mk4 - 17mm - f14 - 30 sec - iso 800 - Manual Exp -

"Ibadi Muslims have been referred to as tolerant Puritans or as political quietists because of their preference to solve differences through dignity and reason rather than with confrontation.
This photograph represents the traditional people of Oman and shows fish selling a traditional way of life and still an important part of the local industry. The fish markets were lively and colourful. We found the people to be friendly and helpful."
The image was taken on a Canon EOS 5D Mk4 with a 16-35mm f4 lens, set to ISO 100, 35mm, f8 and 1/125sec. It was processed in Affinity Photo
"This was taken at Twycross zoo. A single meerkat was isolated suggesting it was a single lookout for the whole group."
"This was taken at the beginning of August just after sunset at Thornham in Norfolk"
This is a montage of images meant as a commentary on global warming. Initially based on the Mont Blanc glacier which is increasingly receding; caused by increasingly hotter yearly temperatures and by the encroachment of more and more visitors.
Everything was originally photographed in very different locations. Both girls were on a bridge in Florence, the ice cream van in Lichfield, the plane in Sydney Harbour and the cyclists in a Leicestershire road race.
"Taken just as most people were leaving the beach and bay area after a beautiful sunny day.
The idea was to get Mount Manganui silhouetted in the sunset."
Building Lights and Street Lights were removed in processing.
I used a Canon 5D mk4 - 19mm - f14 - 2.5 sec - iso 800 - Manual Exp - 6 Stopper Filter and Graduated Neutral Density Filter
